Big cost-saving winner for power-hungry factories

Sabah has plenty of natural gas. But Alvin Liew says his company has waited 11 years for it to cut his factory's high power bills by half. Colourcoil Industries Sendirian Berhad was denied this cheap energy to fire its ovens in making coloured metal sheets for buildings when it set up in 2001. The reason: the exorbitant cost of laying a 10-km pipeline from the gas main in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) to Colourcoil's factory at Telipok. It would have cost the Sabah Energy Corporation, the state's sole gas supplier, 10m ringgit ($3m). And this would have made natural gas expensive and unprofitable to sell.
