Yahya on plans to raise agriculture productivity

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI) has outlined six strategies to transform agriculture in Sabah by 2020. Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin, the recently reappointed Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry for Sabah, revealed this at a meeting with the heads and senior officials of the Ministry's departments and agencies at Wisma Pertanian recently.

Yet, according to Dr. Lee Ming Tong, Advisory of the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster, it is a sector that will provide vast opportunities if developed properly. Much like petroleum refineries, which produce multiple fuels and products from petroleum, bio-refineries convert biomass to produce fuels, power, heat and value-added chemicals.

Helping Cocoa Smallholders get on their feet

More than 90 cocoa smallholders in the Penampang area attended an advanced course on cocoa planting organised by the Malaysian Cocoa Board in Kampung Kibunut, Penampang, yesterday. Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok who was there to launch the course said participants who grow cocoa would receive assistance such as fertilizer, pesticide, and farming equipment for three years to help them get on their feet. He said that the advanced course was part of his Ministry's and the Malaysian Cocoa Board's efforts to help cocoa smallholders.

A Permanent Food Production Park in Putatan

The 5 hectares permanent food production park in Putatan is expected to generate RM5 million income by its first year of production in 2014. The park which costs RM10,365,000 is financed by the federal government as part of the government's strategy to develop a permanent place for food production on a commercial scale using high technology agriculture practices.

Attempt to make Kota Belud paddy fields part of Entry Point Projects of Sabah Development Corridor

A total of 160 paddy field owners in Kota Belud received cash incentives of RM809 per acre or RM2000 per hectare as part of the government's aim in developing paddy farming activities. The incentives, handed out by Deputy Chief Minister Yahya Hussin at Kota Belud recently, are part of the Centralised Management Incentive under the National Key Economic Area (NKEA) for Agriculture or Entry Point Project 11 (EPP 11). Yahya, who is also Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, said that the goal of the EPP 11 in Kota Belud is to increase the productivity of paddy farming. The programme will be carried out in stages beginning in January 2013, when paddy farmers at Kampung Taun Gusi Kerajangan, Taun Gusi Padang and Jawi-Jawi will receive planting assistance from the government.

Pairin reminds the people that BN has brought much progress to their areas

Speaking during a meet-the-people session at Bandukan Baru in Bingkor recently, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan reminded the people that without the dedicated leaders in the present government, development especially in rural areas would not have taken place to the extent it has. He said the progression of development would continue as long as the people remain firm in supporting the present Barisan National (BN) government.
