Yahya: Property development planning must be in sync with the town plan

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin reminded developers and all relevant parties involved to take the master plan of the surrounding areas into account during the blueprint planning of their future property development projects. “In the future, housing, shop lots, highrise building projects and such like should only be approved after it has fulfilled these requirements,” he said. “Developers should not concentrate on the development within the boundaries of their project only.”

Gutsy Malakun rocks Penampang

Penampang means “big rock” in the indigenous Kadazandusun language. And the rice farming district of about 166,000, about a third of them Kadazandusuns, gets its name from a long forgotten village where there were giant rocks. They were the precursors of modern Penampang with its tall buildings and brick houses sitting on what used to be paddy fields. A sprawling 300m-ringgit ($100m) International Technology and Commercial Centre that is taking shape is rocking the suburb of Kota Kinabalu.

Going green

Buildings for healthier living

Buildings have come into focus as the world grapples with climate change. And keeping them green has become a clarion call to the construction industry. Environmentalists say buildings account for much of global warming and pollution as they use up 40% of energy, 12% of water and send 40% of waste to landfill. But lack of mandatory laws, tax and other financial incentives has set back the Malaysian green building index (GBI) that aims to help people live a healthier life in a cooler and cleaner environment.

Real estate

Little to cheer, a lot to worry

By Ng Jia Xiang The Sabah media hailed it a success. In three days, a recent exhibition in Kota Kinabalu sold 500m ringgit ($147m) worth of buildings. But at closer look, the sales offered little cheer. More than three-quarters of the 2.2-billion-ringgit properties were unsold. Of those sold, 50m ringgit was for buildings in Kuala Lumpur. And this should worry the real estate industry because faulty construction is holding back buyers.
