Hajiji: Cleanliness and hygiene is everyone's responsibility

Local authorities and members of the public must work together and be more vigilant in upholding high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in all public places to ensure a healthier and safer environment for the community, said Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Mohd Noor. "We must pay immediate attention and improve the standard of cleanliness in public areas, particularly in restaurants and eateries where we often hear of poor hygiene, unhygenic food handling practices and pest infestation. The situation highlighted by the public and the media is cause for concern, which underlines the urgent need for all parties, especially local authorities to take a proactive approach to maintain at all times a high level of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in all public areas.

Fighting crime is a shared responsibility which require commitment and continuous support from all levels of society, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. According to Najib, broader community involvement in anti-crime activities would be a major step forward towards achieving the government's mission to reduce crime and fear of crime. "It is time to proactively make a united stand against crime," he said after launching the United Against Crime Campaign organised by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) at KLCC Park last Saturday.

Federal Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said women must transform themselves if they wish to play a bigger role in the national development efforts. “We must transform ourselves. We must look at how we can carry out our duties to family and society effectively, and at the same time take part in national development,” she said. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Sabah Women's Group (PPS) on Sunday Azizah, who is the PPS president, said that the women's associations must review the current roles of women.

Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid said close cooperation between the community and government is fundamental in overcoming drug abuse. “Raising awareness on the perils of drug abuse is important, but monitoring, prevention, implementation of the law as well as care and cure are similarly vital,” said Jainab to reporters after attending a briefing at Sabah's National Antidrug Agency (NADA) in Kota Kinabalu's Wisma San Hin, yesterday.

Making domestic helper service acceptable to local job seekers

The Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Siringan Gubat is considering re-introducing the domestic helper course previously known as hospitality home management. The scheme was introduced in 2005, designed to train local people to be maids or domestic helpers in an effort to address the shortage of domestic helpers and to reduce reliance on foreign domestic helpers. The proposal was discussed during a meeting with the director and officers of Human Resource Development Department (JPSM) in his working visit to the Commerce and Technical Training Institute (ILTP) at Pantai Manis Papar on Thursday.

Helping people with disabilities find a niche for themselves

The Sabah State Government will continue its commitment to help people with disabilities gain new skills they need to find jobs, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman. "People with disabilities face various challenges entering employment, and for this reason, the government is focusing efforts to boost their employment opportunities,” he said after launching the new Taman Cahaya Training Centre for the Blind yesterday at Pekan Muhibbah, Sandakan. The new training facility, costing RM 6 million, provides a comfortable workplace for the blind to follow various self-empowerment programs and courses designed to help them develop new skills to enter the job market.

Aim high, Ministry tells athletes

The Ministry of Youth and Sports wants Sabah's contingent to aim for top five positions at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Perlis next year. Assistant Minister to the Minister of Youth and Sports Masiung Banah urged the state's athletes to break Sabah's continuous lack-lustre medal tally in previous SUKMA outings. Even on home ground, Sabah only managed to finish in the top four when it hosted the Games in 2002. "During our meeting recently, our Minister (Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan) had a clear message to all that he wants to see Sabah break our tradition of a mid-table finish...We want to be among the top five finishers," Masiung said at a press conference in Wisma Muis yesterday.
