Musa Aman’s Christmas wish

Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman knows how historical Gaya Street is. It is the oldest and most famous thoroughfare in Kota Kinabalu capital. The British colonial government, which ruled Sabah until 1963, named it after London's upmarket Bond Street as it was the only shopping street. But it hadn't lived up to its name that is synonymous with luxury shopping. However Gaya Street has become a street of festivities where the yearly Christmas, Chinese new year, Ramadan and Kaamatan carnivals are held. This Christmas, Musa has a wish: He wants next year's Gaya Christmas celebration to be bigger and brighter that will bring European tourists here.

A time for holy fun

All work and no play certainly makes Jack a dull boy. Islam, says Hajiji Noor, realizes this and thus encourages lawful entertainment to allow Muslims to live a balanced temporal and spiritual life in perfect harmony with Allah. The minister of local government and housing says Islamic arts such as the nasyid (religious songs), berzanji (rhyming prose) and berkompang (musical tambourines) are inspirational, motivational and entertaining.

The way of the Prophet

Sabah chief minister Musa Aman has always been a fervent advocate of holistic living and development. In eight years he has transformed the Borneo island state's economy into a vibrant one through his Halatuju policy in developing agriculture, tourism and manufacturing while conserving vast tracts of virgin jungle to protect endangered wildlife. This has won him international kudos. Sabah is cash-rich with reserves of slightly more than 2 billion ringgit ($650m). Last year the auditor-general said it was the best managed state of the Barisan Nasional coalition government. And he has achieved this by following the way of Prophet Muhammad in being fair to all.

In Sabah, a star of great joy

The Christmas celebration has got to be merrier. So the Sabah Council of Churches and Kota Kinabalu City Hall have themed this year's four-day Gaya carnival from December 14 to 17 as “the star of great joy.” It reflects on the success of prime minister Najib Razak's 1Malaysia concept of unity which he launched last December. Thus the fair is not just a religious festival but a celebration of national unity, according to Dr Yee Moh Chai, minister of resource development and information technology.
