National Service

Two National Service Camps in Esscom area will reopen in August

Two National Service (NS) camps in Sabah that were closed in March this year because of security concerns following the Sulu militants intrusion in Lahad Datu, will be reopened soon. According to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammudin Tun Hussein the San Shui camp in Tawau and Bagai Budi camp in Sandakan, both located in the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) area will resume training activities as there are no longer security threat around the area. Hishammuddin disclosed this after launching the NS camps open house at Padang Hijau camp in Kluang, Johor. The two camps will resume intakes of trainees beginning August 15. There are a total of seven national service camps in Sabah. They are located in Tambunan, Kota Belud, Tuaran , Papar, Sipitang, Tawau and Sandakan. -- Insight Sabah

Asian countries must be prepared to go off the beaten track

Asian countries are trapped in the "middle income" constraints because of the greatly intensified business competition among themselves, according to University Malaysia Sabah Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah. Mohd. Harun said this in a speech read by University Malaysia Sabah's Labuan International Campus Director Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali at the Fifth International Borneo Business Conference 2012 in Tawau recently.

Najib to meet the pope

Najib Razak, Malaysia's prime minister, is expected to score high in Christian-Muslim relations when he meets Pope Benedict XVI later this month in a move to start diplomatic ties with the Vatican. Political analysts see his visit as a prelude to a snap election expected in late September or early October. Polls are not due until 2013. But the date for his meeting with the pope has not been fixed, a senior government official told Insight Sabah on condition of anonymity.
