Obituary

A man for all seasons

What can you say of an affable 54-year-old government politician who died tragically? That he was loyal, kind, gentle and incorruptible? Accolades don't seem quite enough for a man who was a friend to everyone, including his wife and children. And if ever there was anyone who had no enemies, he had to be Edmund Chong Ket Wah*. In him was the ultimate conscience of a man. Only one adjective speaks ambivalently of his character: his stubborn passion for powerful motorbikes cut short his life. His Kawasaki 750 crashed into a Mercedes Benz on the Sembulan highway in Kota Kinabalu on October 9. But his stubborn, yes, stubborn refusal to allow others to rule his sense of right and wrong had made him a saint.
