University Malaysia Sabah gets attention in Germany

The 2012 International Trade Fair Ideas Invention New Products (iENA) in Nuremberg, Germany is the professional marketplace for ideas and inventions and the leading trade fair of contacts and excellent opportunities for inventors and representatives of trade and industry. iENA was held from 1 to 4 November recently at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center Hall with inventors from 34 countries presenting about 750 individual inventions and new product ideas.

A relentless effort to promote ICT literacy

The Ministry of Resource Development and Information Technology will continue to empower Sabahans with ICT skills and knowledge in 2013, said its Minister Dr. Yee Moh Chai during his winding-up speech at the State Assembly today. Dr. Yee told the Dewan that the Ministry received a supply allocation of RM87.89 million and a development allocation of RM6.93 million in the 2013 budget. This allocation will be used for human capital development, tackling the unemployment problem, and bridging the digital gap between urban and rural areas.

Sindex brings out creative talents

X-Ants Magic isn't any cyber game. It is a cheap natural insect repellant made from coffee, star anise (a spice) and flour. And it is the invention of five school boys of Bandaraya secondary school which won them four prizes including the coveted Chief Minister's Award at the 7th Sabah Invention and Design Exhibition (Sindex). The gold medal also came with 700 ringgit ($228).

Putting the fun in science

As Petronas, the national oil company, gets set to roll out 45 billion ringgit ($14.3) of oil and gas projects in Sabah this year, interest in science and mathematics should come naturally to learners. Not so. Teachers say most of their pupils shy away from these subjects because they think they are boring. But the Petrosains Playsmart Centre is proving them wrong: Science is fun and mathematics doesn't have to be complicated.
