Room for optimism

Sabah's latest 600-room 4-star Ming Garden hotel opened on a high note earlier this month amid falling demand for rooms as Malaysia Airlines has stopped flights between Kota Kinabalu and Osaka, Haneda, Seoul and Perth. These routes to Japan, South Korea and Australia are important to Sabah's tourism. Nevertheless, Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman is upbeat because the industry is resilient. And he expects more tourists this year.

Aiming at Chinese tourists

A staggering 57m Chinese travelled abroad last year, according to the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). They spent about 173 billion ringgit ($55 billion). They shaped the Malaysian flag of yellow, red, blue and white to highlight the Sabah hospitality fiesta on November 6.

Hotel workers

Where guests pay most of staff salaries

Didiawaty Rosli, 23, is elegantly dressed for her job as a waitress at Hotel Promenade in Kota Kinabalu. But she earns only a monthly basic salary of 350 ringgit ($103) which makes her one of the lowest paid workers in Malaysia. That is very much below the poverty line of 690 ringgit for people living in Sabah.
