Siringan tells PETRONAS to increase gas supply to Sabah Energy Corporation

Datuk Siringan Gubat, the Resource Development and Information Technology Minister called upon PETRONAS to increase the volume of natural gas supplied to Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) to enable it be competitive in the industry. “I understand that the SEC has made a request on this to Petronas and my ministry fully supports it and will pursue this matter further for the benefit of the state,” Siringan said after attending a briefing by SEC at Wisma Bandaraya here yesterday. According to Siringan, the current supply of two million standard cubic feet a day that SEC receives is only adequate to meet the requirement of small industries, and is far short of its commitment to supply natural gas to large industries such as independent power plants that requires large volume of natural gas. - Insight Sabah

Cutting down outages

People in Sabah have put up with frequent power outages for years. The reason, according to Sabah Electricity Sendirian Berhad (SESB), is that it is not generating enough electricity because many of its plants are old and they break down often. On average, an electricity consumer experienced the highest power disruption of 48 hours last year. Peter Chin Kah Fui, federal minister of green technology and water, wants to cut it down by slightly more than three-quarters to less than 12 hours by December. If not, he will quit his job, he says. And Ranhill's new 190MW gas turbine plant at Sepanggar Bay, about 25km (16 miles) from Kota Kinabalu, is going to help him achieve his goal.

Consumers gain from stainless steel pipes

If you have been wondering why rusty water trickles from your tap, the answer is in your old leaky and crusted galvanised iron pipes. The Sabah water department has been busy replacing them with expensive stainless steel ones to improve water flow and quality to consumers in Kota Kinabalu, according to the department's deputy director Lim Lam Beng. The exercise will also reduce non-revenue water (NRW) – piped water that is lost during distribution to consumers – by more than half in Sabah.
