Greek journalists go on strike

About 2,000 journalists have gone on strike in central Athens, leaving Greece without any news coverage. They are protesting against job cuts ahead of a two-day walkout by unions trying to block an austerity bill that will stop their country from going bankrupt. Unemployment has reached 16.5%. The Greek government is struggling to get support for a parliamentary vote on Thursday to reform its finances. Greece's European creditors will not give it any more loans to save it from bankruptcy unless it adopts measures to cut spending.

Goodbye News of the World, but not the phone scandal

News of the World is dead

The decision is shocking but it makes sense. The News of the World, Britain's best selling Sunday newspaper, will close after a 168-year run. This Sunday's edition will be its last as Rupert Murdoch who owns it tries to nip an escalating phone hacking scandal. The paper journalists have allegedly hacked into voicemail and text messages of thousands of people, including child murder victims, British royalties and families of soldiers who died in wars.
