Steroids may cause serious vitamin D deficiency

Those who use oral steroids to treat swellings and diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn, lupus and multiple sclerosis may run a higher than average risk of serious vitamin D deficiency. A new study reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that vitamin D levels could fall to a level that may cause serious softening of bones or muscle pain in some patients. Researches advise them, particularly children, to check their blood levels of the vitamin.

How reliable is an annual mammogram? American researches say one of ten will show a false positive result in 10 years. Between 7% and 9% of biopsies don't show cancer. Now researchers say a mammogram every two years would cut risks of a false alarm by a third but worry over the possibility of women catching breast cancers much later

Veterinarians in Britain have called for a ban on advertisements of antibiotics to stop farmers from overusing them because they are boosting the growth of lethal strains of bacteria, the Independent newspaper reports.
