Thousands flee Bangkok as flood waters rise

Yingluck Shinawatra, the Thai prime minister, is fighting a losing battle against floods. She says the crisis has reached a critical point for Bangkok. Thousands are fleeing the capital today as dikes are unlikely to keep rising flood waters away. “It seems like we're fighting against the forces of nature, massive floodwater that is causing damage to several of our dikes,” says Yingluck. Since mid July, the country's worst flood in 100 years has killed 373 people and uprooted 2.5m Thais who live mostly in the north and centre.

Oceans face prehistoric disaster

The Independent compares the world's loss of species to the great prehistoric mass extinctions. Quoting a major report, it says that seas are degenerating far faster than anyone has predicted because of the cumulative impact of a host of factors from climate warming and sea-water acidification, to widespread chemical pollution and gross overfishing.
