$100 of free apps to say sorry

Research in Motion, the BlackBerry maker, is offering its users $100 ($314) worth of free apps as a way of apologising to them for a service blackout. For three days last week, millions of BlackBerry users were without messaging and email services. RIM says it would offer them a $100 credit for some apps in its online store. But it is not known if BlackBerry users are happy with this.

The sayings of Steve Jobs

For Steve Jobs who died on Wednesday at 56, coming face-to-face with death was a defining moment. He was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and fought it gallantly for seven years. Others, according to medical experts, would have succumbed to it in five months. Speaking at Stanford University in 2005, he said:

Not a 5 but an S to iPhone 4

The new Apple iPhone is everything that everyone has been speculating except that it is not an iPhone 5. Tim Cook, the company's new chief executive officer, unveiled the iPhone 4S on October 4. It has a new A5 chip to speed up graphics seven times faster than the old, a camera to produce pictures that are sharper and a voice-recognition system that will turn it into a hands-free personal assistant.

Will Amazon's Kindle Fire set off a price war and threaten iPad?

At 600 ringit ($199), cheaper than an iPad by a third, Amazon's Kindle Fire seems set to spark a tablet war, particularly among manufacturers which use Google Inc's Android software. But will it threaten Apple's iPad? The Kindle Fire doesn't come with a camera, microphone and 3G wireless connection. Jeff Bezos, Amazon's chief executive officer, hopes its low price will attract users who buy Amazon's books, movies, music and other content to store in the cloud.

Asteroid whizzes past Earth safely

A giant rock, the size of a garbage truck, whizzed past Earth at a close distance of 12,000 km (7,500 miles) over the Atlantic Ocean without causing any harm, Reuters reported. It quoted D. C . Agle, a spokesman for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as saying that the asteroid path followed that predicted by scientitsts.

41 Malaysian websites attacked

Reuters reports that at least 41 Malaysian government websites were hacked into overnight, quoting government officials as saying on Thursday that no personal or financial data were compromised, as the Southeast nation becomes the latest target of a cyber-war waged by the activists. Bloomberg says the Sabah tourism's website was one of them that had been attacked. Others included the government's main portal and the Tour Malaysia guide.

Apple in the cloud threatens PCs

Apple's iCloud that allows files to be stored in remote data centres is set to sideline the personal computer industry, according to Bloomberg. It will lead to less consumer dependence on Microsoft Windows software and PCs as Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive officer, aims to make Apple the centre of consumers' digital lives. “The PC will be the most visible casualty of the cloud revolution,” Bloomberg quoted Steve Perlman, a former Apple engineer, as saying. “Apple knows it.”
