Ex-director of Goldman Sachs charged with insider trading

The trial is likely to be long-drawn. Investigations into charges of insider against Rajat K. Gupta, a former director at Goldman Sachs and Proctor & Gamble, are likely to extend beyond Wall Street, according to industry analysts. And many big corporations are likely to come into focus. Gupta, 62, has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and five counts of securities fraud. The New York Times says he is accused of sharing corporate secrets about Goldman and Procter & Gamble with Raj Rajaratnam, co-founder of the Galleon Group, who was jailed 11 years early this month for insider trading.

Solar trade war intensifies

Western makers of solar energy products are waging a trade war against Chinese solar companies which could lose some of their biggest foreign markets. They are stepping up a campaign to stop price dumping by their Chinese competitors in Europe. American solar firms have already called on the U.S. government to slap anti-dumping duties on made-in-China solar energy products. They grieve over aggressive undercutting by heavily subsidized Chinese firms which they blame for the loss of thousands of American jobs.

The lure of high dividend yields

Investors are in a dilemma as shares fall around the world But shares in Asia remain attractive because companies are paying them record dividends to hold on to them. Bloomberg says that a drop in equity, including last week's 11% fall in the MSCI China Index , has pushed dividend yields up to as much as 37% on Australia's S&P/ASX 200 and 86% for the Chinese guage. That helped send the MSCI Asia Pacific Index's payout to 3.2%, exceeding the MSCI All-Country World Index by the most since at least 1995, according to Bloomberg.
