Amidst the goings-on in and around Lahad Datu that have hogged our news headlines tourists are still coming to the state apparently unperturbed.

In the departure hall of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport today where cabinet ministers and government officials awaited the arrival of the body of Detective Sergeant Baharin Hamit who was killed in a shootout with gunmen in Semporna on Saturday, Insight Sabah reporters met with two German tourists, Zurhar and Brita Hassan who were heading to Danum Valley via Lahad Datu, for a four day stay at the world renowned forest research centre.

Zurhar, who is a scientist, said that he only found out about the skirmishes in Lahad Datu that day. However, he and his wife were not too worried about their travels being affected, saying that the situation at Danum Valley "should be okay".

The couple has been in Sabah for four days and would continue their stay in the state for another three weeks.

Earlier Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun had told the media that the intrusion in Lahad Datu would not  affect the tourism sector.

He said this was because the location where the intruders were holed up was in an isolated area where the entry and exit points were completely sealed off by security forces.

The standoff in Lahad Datu has now entered its 26th day. - Insight Sabah
