Addressing an estimated crowd of 4, 500 young teachers at the 1Malaysia Young Teachers (GM1M) Assembly in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister, spoke about the heavy responsibilities shouldered by the nation’s teachers, and their role in fulfilling the country's aspiration to be a developed nation by 2020.

Deputy Chief Minister Muhyiddin Yassin“In the next seven years, we want to mold highly educated young minds, who will have the necessary skills and knowledge to help the country’s development in various sectors,”

To be successful in the future, we must strive to achieve par excellence, and the responsibility to get us there lies with teachers,” he stressed.

According to Muhyiddin, young teachers make up a very important group in the education sector as 49.5 percent of teachers in the country are aged between 21 and 35 years old.

“As young teachers, you have a long journey ahead of you. Perhaps another 25 to 30 years. Therefore, you will be the ones to determine whether or not our education system will work,” he said.

A brainchild of Muhyiddin, the GM1M movement is aimed at connecting young teachers with the Ministry of Education, to better implement the Malaysian Education Development Plan 2013 – 2025.

Chief Minister Musa AmanChief Minister Musa Aman commended the dedication of teachers in the State. Teachers are role models to students, he said, and their roles and contributions to the progress and development of human capital in the country are much appreciated.

“The state government realises that without the hard work, dedication and sacrifice of teachers who serve in all parts of the state, we would not be able to produce quality human capital of enough competence to bring about transformation as envisaged by the government, especially in Sabah,” he said.

Musa assured the gathering of teachers that the state government will continue to provide support and assistance to any programme initiated by the Ministry of Education to raise the level of professionalism among teachers in the state.

He further urged young teachers to continue to work and serve with pride and commitment to educate the young and at the same time help realise the country’s development agenda.

“I hope that teachers can excel in their responsibilities in educating and guiding young people to become knowledgeable future leaders. Outstanding teachers and schools will most likely produce many excellent students,” he said. - Insight Sabah
