The State Government welcomed the setting up of the Skim Prihatin Pendidikan 1Malaysia (SPP1M) that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently. The scheme will assist students at the tertiary level in obtaining additional study loans.

Speaking to reporters yesterday after presenting the early schooling assistance to pupils at SK Batu Putih in Sandakan, Chief Minster Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman thanked the Prime Minister for introducing such a programme that will bring much help to the people.

The SPP1M was introduced as a means to assist parents who are finding it increasingly difficult to finance their children's further education due to the rising cost of higher education. The SPP1M will provide additional funding with loans limited to RM150,000 for medical courses and RM100,000 for other critical courses.

The SPP1M loan is in addition to the existing National Higher Education Corporation Fund loan for students pursuing their bachelor's degree or master's in certain fields. The programme will be implemented in two stages - in the second quarter of 2013 for entry into local universities and in June for twinning programmes and further studies abroad. - Insight Sabah
