The aid was announced by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the 2013 Budget last year. The aid involved a sum of RM234.5 million which is contributed by the Government and the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).

Musa Aman said the RM1,000 payment is in recognition of  the services  of the non-pensionable military veterans in defending this country.

“The government appreciates the immense contributions that the military veterans made to the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, Major General Dato’ Zulkiflee Mazlan, Director General of the MAF Veteran Affairs Department asked the ex-servicemen who have not registered and applied for the aid to fill in the forms which they can obtain from the MAF Veteran Affairs Department office in Kota Kinabalu.

Major General Zulkiflee Mazlan“The forms must be returned together with the required documents to any MAF Veteran Affairs Department office and we will still accept any application to be processed,” he told reporters during a press conference after the distributions of the RM1,000 aids.

Major General Zulkiflee disclosed  that currently 83,000 non-pensionable military veterans have registered out of 234,500 nationwide.

“For Sabah, we have gathered 3,000 non-pensionable military veterans who have registered for the aid and we estimate there are more than 2,000 who have yet  to register.

“The veterans eligible to receive  the aid include MAF ex-servicemen, volunteers under MAF, ex-members of Force 136, and those who served in the British Army in Malaya or Singapore, and the Sarawak Rangers,” he said.

Sergeant Nordin AbdullahThe Major General clarified, however, that only veterans who were honourably discharged on or before 31 December 2012 are eligible to receive the aid money.

For Sergeant Nordin Abdullah, 67, the aid did not come a day too soon. He said he was grateful for it and that   this was the first time that the ex-military personnel  received such aid.

“I was so happy to hear the Prime Minister announce that former armed forces personnel would  receive a  RM1,000 aid. I was so happy the government did not forget  the non-pensionable ex-soldiers ,” he said.

Nordin who served in the Malaysia Regiment Ranger between 1963 and 1974 hoped that the government would  continue to help the non-pensionable Malaysian Armed Forces veterans as they are in need of help. - Insight Sabah
