In his speech read by Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman called upon delegates to the 3rd Borneo Dental Congress to continuously seek and update their knowledge in order to upgrade their professional expertise.

"Knowledge transfer is traditionally achieved through professional journals and magazines. Today, we can browse the internet for information on virtually anything. However, it is still very useful to obtain knowledge by attending scientific courses, meetings and conventions like this one,” said Musa to the 360 local and international delegates at the officiating ceremony in Kota Kinabalu’s 1Borneo Grand Ballroom recently.

“There should be no excuses for anyone not to update their knowledge. In fact, I think dental practitioners should bind themselves to keep abreast of professional development to be true to their profession.”

Deputy Chief Minister Yee Moh Chai“The Malaysian Dental Association Eastern Zone (MDA EZ) has over the years shown strong commitment in providing continuing education opportunities for their members and has also worked to promote free dental check-ups and treatments in rural areas through dental camps and the Oral Health Campaign,” added the Chief Minister.

Last year, five of these programs were carried out in the rural areas of Sabah.

“As  the dentist-patient ratio is down to 1:6,810, we need to find ways to improve the oral health of  Malaysians. I always believe education plays a vital role here, and fear of seeing a dentist is the greatest obstacle.”

“One way of ensuring good dental health is to continue educating the public on dental care and oral hygiene and  the need for regular visits to  a dentist. All too often people see a dentist  only when it is already too late.”

Speakers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, India and Chile were invited to speak at the 3-day congress that started from the 25th till the 27th of January 2013. Other than listening to the talks, delegates attending the congress were also familiarised with the newest state-of-the-art technology and the latest developments in the discipline. – Insight Sabah
