20 Cholera cases detected in Papar
Deputy Health Minister Rosnah Shirlin cautioned the public, especially those residing in Papar, to observe strict personal hygiene and take steps to ensure that the food and drinks they consume are free from contamination.
She disclosed to reporters after officiating the Program Kem Jejak Universiti (KEJU) at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) in Kinarut yesterday that 20 cholera cases were detected in the Papar district this month, 18 at the Papar Temporary Detection Centre and two at Taman Limau-Limauan.
She said four of the patients have been discharged while the remaining fourteen were still being treated at the Papar Hospital.
“I would like to remind everyone in the affected areas to always emphasise cleanliness especially when preparing food. Cholera thrives in unhygienic environment, so it is vital that food is cooked and prepared properly,” she said.
She assured the public that the health authorities are taking measures to check the spread of the disease.
She advised the public to reduce contact with family members infected with cholera to avoid catching the potentially deadly bacteria themselves, adding however that no new cases or suspected infections have been detected since early last week.
According to medical advice, Cholera symptoms include profuse but painless diarrhea and vomiting of clear fluid. Left untreated, cholera can result in life-threatening dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. - Insight Sabah
