More government funds for Chinese primary schools

A total of 65 Chinese primary schools in Sabah will receive a significant amount of allocation from the government to repair and expand their classrooms this year.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Wee Ka Siong said the Government's priority for funding this year would be on repairing schools which have been declared to be unsafe, and schools that were affected by flood.

Dr. Wee said, the details of the grants will be announced after the Chinese New Year. He said the allocation for this year would be 10 per cent higher than last year.

Last year the Government through the Education Ministry gave out RM9.35 million to the 65 schools in the state.

"For Sabah, this time around, we will give more funding. A very significant increase," he said, after chairing a meeting of the Sabah Chinese School Development Committee at the Pacific Sutera, on Saturday.

He also added that Sabah was among the states which received the highest amount of aid and that his Ministry is now processing the requests submitted by all the schools. Some of the schools have requested funds to repair their school buildings that have been declared to be unsafe, and one of the schools in Beaufort was reported to have suffered serious damage in the recent floods.

"I want to see all the schools which have such problems to be given sufficient money to do repairs," he said added that the aid would also enable schools to buy more furniture for their teachers and students.

He said that there are only a few of schools in Sabah that need to be demolished and replaced with new ones.

"We need to make sure that the students are safe. We want to resolve this once and for all. For some urban areas we really need to build more classrooms because, as I understand, some of the schools have more than 2,000 students," he said. - Insight Sabah
