Rich eco-tourism potential deep in Sabah's interior

Sabah's many pristine rivers hold much potential for eco-tourism.

Sabah is blessed with a wealth of natural treasures, the stock-in-trade of eco-tourism.

"Tourists come to Sabah looking for an adventure, and the state has many breathtaking attractions just waiting to be discovered," Sabah Assistant Agriculture Minister and Food Industry, Datuk Bobbey Suan said in his speech at the launching of a grassroots youth fish pond project at the site of the proposed Sangkaliwara recreational center at Kampung Pampangon, Sapulut.

"Visitors from Europe, Japan, China, and the United States visit Sabah to explore the  state's rich natural beauty such as pristine rain-forests and untamed rivers," he added.

Sabah Assistant Agriculture Minister and Food Industry, Datuk Bobbey SuanDatuk Bobbey said eco-tourism remains widely popular with tourists because international visitors come here to experience Sabah's rich ecological treasures, which are becoming hard to find in their own countries. Bobbey mentioned jungle tracking and whitewater rafting as two possible eco-tourism activities for Sangkaliwara.

"The nearby Logongan River for instance, has great potential for recreational activities such as white water rafting, due to its interesting and challenging rapids "he said.

Touching on the youth fish project, Bobbey told the youths that the project can be developed further and made attractive to outside visitors.

The launching of the fish pond project  was attended by at least 12 associations from five sub-divisions namely Nabawan, Pamuntarian, Sepulut, Pegalungan, and Pensiangan. The gathering was a festive occasion with a native and patriotic song competition, a Pinongkoloh beauty queen contest and dance performances.

Also present at the function were Nabawan District Officer Buduan O.T Majalu, representative of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Syelvester Pilol together with department officer for Nabawan District Esing Singil; Nabawan People's Development Leader, Jubilin Kilan; and other community leaders. - Insight Sabah
