A total of 1,380 units of 1Malaysia netbooks have been distributed to students around Tambunan by the Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan at the Tambunan Community Hall yesterday.

In his speech, Pairin said the children were the nation's pride and assets. “What I see today is the nation’s hopes and strong forces of power that can lead our country in the future,” he said.

He said the government's concern for the people has led to the National Broadband Initiative (NBI) aimed at helping the people to increase broadband infrastructure capability and bring Internet to all.

“I have no doubt that with this facility, many people would benefit from the internet if they use it for  the purpose of increasing their knowledge,” he said.

Pairin also advised  the students to use the 1Malaysia netbook wisely. He said they should be thankful for all the benefits and facilities that have been given to them.

“During my youth, there was no such thing as a computer; not even  television. Now students can enjoy many things that we were unable to have.

Aaron Tan, Deputy Director of Sabah and Labuan MCMC

“I believe with the facility that we have in ICT, the world is a brighter place ,” he said.

Before ending his speech, Tan Sri Pairin told the students, “the future is in your hands; make use of the time and tools that you have wisely.”

Aaron Tan, Deputy Director of Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the 1Malaysia netbook is an important tool for people to  connect with one another not just within the country but throughout the world.

He explained that the Aerogate netbook consists of Windows 7, which is protected with an anti-virus programme and equipped with Microsoft office software.  He hoped with this programme the broadband penetration can be increased.

Chelsea JustinFor Chelsea Justin, she was very happy to receive the 1Malaysia netbook.  The Primary Six pupil from SK Kumawanan Tambunan said she does not have to borrow her classmates’ laptop computers any more, or spend her spare time at their houses to get access to the Internet.

The 12 year old girl now has one to call her own. Chelsea said, “When I was called to receive this, I was so nervous. I never thought that I can be so lucky to receive this from the government. ”

“Without the netbook, I would have a hard time completing my homework, but now, I’m confident that I can carry out my study and it will be easier,” she said, adding that such an aid was very helpful for students from low-income families like her.

Harry VilaryHarry Vilary, 7, a pupil from SK Tiong Widu who also received a netbook computer, eagerly checked the box containing the netbook computer that he had been longing for; Harry was happy to get the gadget, which he considered a luxury, since his family could never afford to get one for him or his siblings.

His father, Hamdi Sumpongol, 38, said he is grateful to the government which never stops to help the people in need.

“I am only a farmer and I can hardly make ends meet for the family. So with this free 1Malaysia netbook I am just thankful that my son can use it so that he will not left behind,” he said.
