Rosnah : Free medicine policy still stands

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin

RM1.8 billion has been spent by the Government to provide free supply of medicines to the people at all government hospitals and clinics, according to Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

The provision of free medicines is in line with  the National Medicines Policy which stipulates that  good quality, safe, effective and affordable medicines should be supplied equally to all Malaysian citizens to improve the quality of health of the people.

The Health Ministry made the statement to refute allegations that the government will stop the free supply of medicines in government hospitals and clinics.

Rosnah said the rising costs were  due to the increase in the number of non-contagious disease cases such as diabetes, cardio-vascular, respiratory and cancer as well as costly new medicines.

Although the cost of medicines has increased over the years, the government will not cease to ensure that the public will continue to  have  access to quality health services.

Rosnah also assured the public that no policy change has been made in this regard, and no policy  change  will occur without taking into account the views and opinions of the public.  -- Insight Sabah
