Pang : Sports bring people together

Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Peter Pang

Taking part in sporting events is not only about winning, but it is also an opportunity to exchange cooperation and work together in pursuit of shared goals, build new friendships, deepen cooperation and share different experiences and achievements.

This is what Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Peter Pang said about sports at the Asian Zone Taekwondo Culture Open championship 2012 during the launching of the Asian Zone Taekwondo Culture Open Championship at the Kota Kinabalu Sport complex.

The two-day tournament was organized by the Taekwondo Association, which was held at Kota Kinabalu on December 11-12.

Pang also commended the association for hosting the international championship that has brought competitors from many nations together. The Taekwando Association President and organising commitee chairman Lau Ki Wai also attended the launching of the event.

200 athletes from Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Macau, Singapore and China took part in the tournament.

Guangdong of China emerged overall champions in the open category, with Hong Kong coming at second, and Macau at third place.

Local athletes displayed a strong performance in the junior category despite foreign domination in the open category with the MSY Taekwondo Association taking top honours followed by Korea at second, and Labuan taking third place.

The championship featured 8 weight divisions consisting of the open and junior categories (14-17 years old) and 10 divisions in the super junior (10-13 years old) category, for both men and women. –Insight Sabah
