Showtime for Sabah musicians

<b>Tapping local music talents</b>: Masidi (<i>in the middle with a cigar</i>) and the Sabah band of musicians.

Sabah cultural board to nurture professional musicians

There are lots of talented Sabahan musicians. But until recently there was no place for them to show their talents, so says Masidi Manjun, Sabah’s minister of tourism, culture and environment. So the Sabah cultural board has teamed up with Cock and Bull Pub at the Waterfront in Kota Kinabalu to give them a venue to rise to the occasion.

Every Sunday evening the top 10 local bands perform at the pub. They have been chosen from 35 in a battle of the bands contest called “Prima Akustika” that began in February last year.

“This is just the beginning,” Mr Masidi said at the launch of “Akustika (acoustics) Nite on February 24. “We want them to make music their vocation.”

He says the cultural board would do all it can to nurture local professional musicians.

“The local music scene is dominated by Filipinos,” Mr Masidi says. “We want to change that. My point is our musicians are as good as them and given the chance, encouragement and training, they will excel.” – Insight Sabah
