University Malaysia Sabah gets attention in Germany
The 2012 International Trade Fair Ideas Invention New Products (iENA) in Nuremberg, Germany is the professional marketplace for ideas and inventions and the leading trade fair of contacts and excellent opportunities for inventors and representatives of trade and industry.
iENA was held from 1 to 4 November recently at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center Hall with inventors from 34 countries presenting about 750 individual inventions and new product ideas.
Continuing its ability for springing surprises, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) bagged 3 golds s, 3 silvers and one bronze.
UMS Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said all of the UMS researchers who participated in the tournament have won medals.
"Out of the seven contested research products, UMS managed to get 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and a bronze. This is a remarkable achievement because we competed with many researchers from leading international universities," he said.
In the iENA contest most of the inventions were in the field of electrical technology, electronics and solar technology, power engineering, machinery construction, environmental protection, security systems and alarm devices. There were also inventions in the area of medical technology and medicine. Others came under the category of communication systems, transportation, computer technology, agriculture and forestry. The building industry, home economics and nutrition, were also featured in the inventions, as were games and sports.
One gold medal was won by Prof Dr. Suhami Mohd Yasir who presented his innovation called ‘Greenhouse concept of solar drier for seaweed drying’.
Two other items presented by Dr. Patricia Matanjun and Assoc. Prof Dr. Charles Vairappan won the other gold medals. Dr. Matanjun calls her creation the 'NaTea- herbal tea mixtureof Sabah green seaweed pennywort and mint', while Prof. Vairappan won gold for his 'Degrable biopolymer from marine sponge bacteria'.
Dr. Patricia also contributed a silver medal through her research on 'Noval algea derived anti-inflammation drugs' while the rest of the silver obtained through the research produced by Assoc. Prof Dr. Chye Fook Yee.
The Director of Research and Innovation Management Centre UMS; Assoc. Dr. Tongkul Felix said, most of the products of this research are in the process of commercialization.
In another development, UMS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Naturalis Biodiversity Center, University of Leiden in Amsterdam.
Dr. Mohd Harun said the MoU is a follow up of the official working visit to the University last March of Sabah’s Head of State, who is also UMS Chancellor Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.
He said the MoU will include research in the field of marine biodiversity and terrestrial biodiversity.
