Meja dan kerusi percuma dialu-alukan di Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu

Ia bermula pada 1917 sebagai sebuah sekolah swasta yang ada 30 murid. Sejak itu, sekolah rendah Cina Chung Hwa di Kota Kinabalu yang diasaskan oleh Oh Hou Teck, seorang usahawan etnik Cina dari Fujian, berkembang menjadi salah satu daripada 2,324 sekolah yang dibantu kerajaan. Bagaimanapun, ia tidak pernah berhenti daripada hidup hasil daripada sedekah. Baru-baru ini, S P Setia Foundation, terima kasih kepada timbalan ketua menteri Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, menyumbangkan 1,000 meja dan kerusi dengan kos RM60,000 kepadanya. Pemberian itu tepat pada masanya bagi menggantikan meja dan kerusi yang sudah uzur di 48 bilik darjahnya, kata Chong Lee Li, guru yang setia bersama sekolah itu sejam 15 tahun.
Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, pengerusi yayasan itu berkata, Dr Yee memberitahu yayasan itu mengenai masalah yang dihadapi sekolah berkenaan. Dengan rasa yakin dan tanpa banyak cakap, Dr Yee yang juga menteri pembangunan sumber dan teknologi maklumat, turut membantu kerja-kerja pembaikan sekolah dan gelanggang bola keranjang sekolah itu, kata Eng Thiam Leong, pengetua sekolah berkenaan. Pada 2005, Dr Yee mengilhamkan kad ucapan hari guru di mana murid-murid boleh menyatakan penghargaan kepada guru mereka setiap hari.

Yayasan S P Setia adalah sayap amal kepada salah satu konglomerat properti Malaysia. Ia akan mengubah kawasan Keretapi Negeri Sabah seluas 25 hektar di Tanjung Aru menjadi sebuah pekan dan pusat pengangkutan dengan kos RM1.6 bilion.
Kerajaan membayar gaji kepada 89 guru sekolah itu. Namun Chung Hwa masih bergantung kepada derma untuk penjagaannya. Dewan Perniagaan dan Industri Cina Kota Kinabalu yang memilkinya memberinya di antara RM30,000 dan RM50,000 setiap tahun. Dan kerajaan Sabah memberikan geran tahunan sebanyak RM80,000.
Pelajar tidak perlu membayar yuran. Kira-kira 30% daripada murid di sana adalah Melayu, Kadazandusun dan Murut.
Lee berkata, yayasan itu memberi RM150,000 kepada tadika di Penampang dan Keningau. Ia juga membayar RM188,000 untuk pusat pembelajaran komuniti di Kampung Kalampun di Keningau. – Insight Sabah
