The rise of
Sabah women
Statistics lend credence to saying
Behind every man, there’s a woman. Statistics seem to bear this out in Sabah: about half of its 3.2m people are women. But they don’t just prod their men to success. Women in the north Borneo island state have risen to new heights with many of them in top jobs. Deputy chief minister Dr Yee Moh Chai notes that women have found their rightful place in Sabah and are particularly influential in education.
“Most teachers are women,” he said at the launch of a socio-economic survey on ethnic Chinese women in Sabah in Kota Kinabalu on February 19. The event marked international women’s day. Women are in about 14% of top decision-making jobs in the Sabah government.
Nationally, prime minister Najib Razak has set a target for women to hold 30% of top corporate posts by 2016.
In the last 12 years, the number of educated Sabah women has almost doubled to 434,200 with many of them in managerial positions. Politically, they are influential as they form about half of the one million voters in their state. – Insight Sabah
