Yahya Hussin bekerja keras pastikan perairan Sabah penuh hidupan marin
Timbalan Ketua Menteri Datuk Yahya Hussin sememangnya berhak untuk berasa bimbang. bekalan ikan semakin berkurangan pada kadar yang mencemaskan, apabila hasil tangkapan dari laut menurun kepada kira-kira 16%. Tahun lalu, nelayan menangkap 175,000 tan ikan, kurang 33,000 tan daripada yang ditangkap pada tahun 1999 iaitu 207,000 tan. Sebagai menteri yang punyai bidang kuasa dalam pertanian dan industri makanan, beliau menjatuhkan tukun tiruan ke dalam lautan bagi memastikan ikan dan hidupan marin lain dapat membiak dengan pesatnya.
Yahya berkata, statistik rasmi menunjukkan bahawa hasil ikan berkurangan dengan mengejut iaitu 92% dalam tempoh 36 tahun, daripada kira-kira 2.5 tan bagi setiap satu kilometer persegi pada 1971 kepada 210kg pada 2007. Dan beliau memberi amaran bahawa industri perikanan Sabah berdepan dengan ancaman serius survival ikannya ketika hasil ikan menurun kepada kira-kira 15% setiap 10 tahun.

Penangkapan ikan secara berlebihan dan penggunaan bom serta racun seperti sianida untuk menangkap ikan mengurangkan secara drastik jumlah ikan di pesisiran pantai, kata Yahya. Sesetengah spesies ikan bernilai tinggi parrot fish, kerapu, snapper dan jerung mengalami kepupusan.
Namun Yahya bekerja keras untuk menggandakan bekalan ikan supaya 24,000 nelayan Sabah akan terus menikmati kehidupan baik hasil menangkap ikan dan 3.2 juta orang akan ada makanan dari laut. Baru-baru ini beliau menurunkan terumbu konkrit yang diperbuat daripada besi ke dalam laut dekat Putatan di mana beliau adalah wakil rakyatnya. Kira-kira RM400,000 nilai tukun ini dijatuhkan di sana. Ia boleh kekal di sana selama 50 tahun.
Pegawai perikanan berkata, tukun-tukun tiruan ini akan menggalakkan pertambahan hidupan marin selepas empat bulan, lebih cepat daripada yang disangka pakar biologi marin.
Kerajaan Sabah membelanjakan kira-kira RM4 juta ke atas tukun tiruan ini sejak 2009. Ia dilabuhkan ke dalam air dekat Kota Kinabalu, Beaufort, Tuaran, Kudat, Sandakan dan Tawau. – Insight Sabah
