For two days starting December 3, job seekers will have the enviable luxury to choose from the 22,200 jobs nationwide offered at the Sabah Job Expo* on the lower ground floor of Suria Sabah shopping mall in Kota Kinabalu. Two thousand and two hundred of these are in Sabah. And the sheer abundance of jobs has come with a sagely advice to job seekers from Deputy Chief Minister Dr Yee Moh Chai: Don’t be choosy.
Dr Yee, who heads the ministry of resource development and information technology, will launch the expo and he expects a turnout of 10,000. Malaysia has very low unemployment at about 3.4%. Even then much of this is passive; meaning people who can work but refuse to because they are choosy of the type of jobs.
Employers will be offering jobs from 55 booths at the expo which Dr Yee says is one of his ministry’s very important yearly events. Among them are oil, energy and telecommunication companies such as Petronas, Sabah Energy Corporation, Celcom, Maxis and DiGi, hotels, restaurants, airlines, ICT firms and department stores.
Dr Yee says the expo has a new name and a different emphasis. It was known as “career expo” which had a strong focus on training people for the right jobs. “We are now focusing on job availability,” he says.
The expo themed “Human capital and ICT is the agent of change” will be carnival-like with 15 artistes entertaining the visitors. Experts will give talks on job-seeking techniques and résumé writing. There will also be tips for those who want to start an internet business.
Suria FM, a radio station, has teamed up with Dr Yee’s ministry to publicize the expo. – Insight Sabah
*The Expo hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
