Sabah aims at highest record as it seeks to bring broadband to villages

Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu at 4,095m (13,435 feet) is Malaysia’s tallest. It is easy to climb; and climbers, including the aged, just walk up the mountain. From November 21 to 23, an attempt will be made to connect computers on its summit, ironically named the Low’s peak (after Hugh Low, a British colonial officer). Hailed as the “highest Local Area Network party” in Malaysia it aims for a place in the Malaysia Book of Records. But internet broadband usage in the east Malaysian Borneo island state remains low at 33% against a national average of 60%.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr Yee Moh Chai is pressing the federal government to change that and particularly to bridge the urban-rural digital divide. He is Sabah’s minister of resource development and information technology.

“Broadband is no longer a luxury,” he said at the launch of ICT month in Kota Kinabalu on November 8. This year’s theme to promote ICT is “Digitalizing Sabah: Creating the Wave 2.0”.

There are 28 events to get people, young and old, and the handicapped, excited about information and computer technology; including a Sabah Got Ideas contest offering a 5,000-ringgit ($1,600) prize and 20,000 ringgit seed money to start an ICT business with their ideas. – Insight Sabah
