“Thank you, Dr Yee!”

Sabah government trains youth for business and industry

Fredicksyenito:
Secretarial course.Fredicksyenito Fridict, 21, and Jasliah Elon, 19, are two of the 196 new graduates of the Technical and Commerce Training Institute (ILTP) who are grateful to the Sabah government for giving them the skills they need to earn a living. They are the fruit of the efforts by the ministry of resource development and information technology to produce skilled manpower for the growing demand of business and industries in the state.

“Thank you for looking after us,” Jasliah tells Dr Yee Moh Chai, the minister of resource development and information technology.

Fredicksyenito, from Bingkor, Keningau, took a one-year secretarial course. “I know it sounds odd to some people,” he says. “The career has been dominated by females.”

Jasliah: Skilled beautician. He has become adept in taking dictation in shorthand and managing an office.

Fredicksyenito says he is also interested in marketing and aims to be his own boss one day.

“It is my dream to own a supermarket,” he says. “Perhaps I’ll start with a cyber café once I’ve earned enough money from my job.”

Jasliah of kampung Longob, Kota Marudu, took a one-year beautician course. She is the youngest in her family of nine.

She was working at Julia salon in Penampang before joining the course. “I’m better skilled now in manicure, pedicure and facial make-up,” Jasliah says.

She will be re-joining Julia Salon. She earned about 600 ringgit ($176) a month as a hairdresser. Now, she can expect to earn more.

“I’m proud to receive this certificate which shows that I’m recognised for my skills,” Jasliah says, adding that she still wants to improve her skills as a hair stylist and beautician. She hopes to open her own beauty salon one day. – Insight Sabah
