Vocational training
Skilled technicians in great demand

Training institute introduces new courses; enrolment rises
Sabah’s booming economy has created a big demand for skilled technicians. So much so that the state Institute of Technical Training and Commerce (ILTP) is introducing two new courses to meet manpower needs of the oil and gas industry as enrolment for technical training rises. The oil and gas industry is set to grow.
Dr Yee Moh Chai, minister of resource development and information technology, said the new courses would take 40 students. The structural welding and fabrication course, which begins in January, will have 20 students while the chargemen course will start in July.
The ILTP will take 858 students next year for its many other technical and vocational courses. Dr Yee said the number was encouraging as there were other schools offering similar training. “I can see that the people’s confidence in ILTP is increasing,” he said in a message in a souvenir magazine marking the graduation of 196 trainees of various industrial training programmes.
Dr Yee, who presented certificates to the trainees in Papar, said the structural welding and fabrication course would be conducted in cooperation with the human resource development department (JPSM), Petronas national oil company and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL). The chargemen course is supported by JPSM, Petronas and the Malaysian Power Commission.
He said the Sabah government spent 8.5m ringgit ($2.5m) to build hostels for the trainees and buy equipment for ILTP. “The machines meet national occupational skill standard (NOSS) for level one and two of the skill certification in Malaysia,” he said.
Dr Yee said the JPSM, under his ministry, was producing skilled youthful technicians to meet the rising demand for industrial manpower. The institute has also been training youth for middle-level management jobs.
He hoped that the JPSM would introduce advance diploma courses to make ILTP more competitive in producing higher skilled manpower.
Meanwhile, he advised the new graduates to grab whatever job that came their way. “Don’t be choosy,” he told them. “I would like parents to encourage their children to get rid of this mental attitude.” – Insight Sabah
